Humanity had few explosives other than gunpowder until 1847 when Ascanio Sobrero created nitroglycerin by combining nitric and sulfuric acid with a fat extract called glycerin. Sobrero found it too volatile for use as an explosive and turned to medical uses. After a self-experiment, he reported that ingesting nitroglycerin led to “a most violent, pulsating headache accompanied by great weakness of the limbs”. (He also killed his dog.)
